Thornton Oaks Retirement Community has announced the opening of a new exhbit, All Digital, featuring the photographs by Jim Baxter.
The exhibit opens Aug, 2 at 4 p.m., and Baxter will be on hand to discuss his work and respond to questions.
A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Baxter found his love of photography at the age of six using a box camera. Baxter learned much from his neighbor, Louis Nollau, an early photographer who took pictures for the Union Pacific Railroad before becoming the department head for engineering drawing at the University of Kentucky. He also got instruction of his father, who was an amateur photographer. During his college years, he did wedding photography using the twin lens reflex Rollicord camera to help pay for college expenses.
In the classroom, Baxter used his photographs to provide illustrative materials in anthropology for his lectures while teaching in McPherson, Kansas and Memphis, Tennessee. He later became the Director of Instructional Media at Shelby State Community College in Memphis.
Upon retirement, Baxter his has been able to take up digital photography. He and his wife, Deanna, are residents of Thornton Oaks Retirement Community.
