Old Town artist Michael Vermette’s “Gull Rock – Monhegan,” an oil painting on board, has been chosen as the winner of this year’s 10th annual 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale publicity contest.
The 10×10 Art Exhibit event, to be held this year on Sept. 22, is an annual fundraiser for Arts Are Elementary, a local nonprofit that provides professional artist residencies in every elementary classroom in Brunswick. Vermette’s piece will be used in all 10×10 publications, including event posters, postcards, and programs. This piece, along with the publicity contest runners up and several other works of art, will be part of a special silent auction at the 10×10.
Vermette teaches art parttime at the Indian Island School; his work can be viewed at Elizabeth Moss Galleries in Falmouth, The Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth, The Lupine Gallery on Monhegan, and on his website michaelvermette.com.
The first runner up is Mary Mraz’s 12×12 painting “Cup Acrylic.” Mraz took up painting ten years ago; by trade she is a nurse practitioner. The 10th Annual 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale will mark the first public display of Mraz’s work.
The second runner up is Middy Thomas’s 10×10 acrylic “Drying Off.” Thomas, a longtime participant in the 10×10, and said she works in almost any medium and subject matter, having made a career as a freelance artist. Thomas teaches painting at her studio in Brunswick.
The 10th Annual 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale will feature more than 250 original works of art, all by Maine Artists. Works measuring 8×10 inches and 10×10 inches will sell for $200; works measuring 12×12 inches will sell for $250; and works measuring 12×24 inches will sell for $300, plus tax.
Half of the proceeds of each sale will be collected by the artist and the other half will be designated to help fund Arts Are Elementary professional artist residencies. A preview of this year’s art will be seen online on the 10×10 website in early September as well as live at the Curtis Library and St. Paul’s sites on Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. and Sept. 22 from noon to 3 p.m.
