Maine State Police still are unable to identify the woman whose body was found Wednesday morning on Route 193 in Cherryfield.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, issued a press release Thursday that described the woman as being middle-age.

An autopsy was completed Thursday at the state Medical Examiner’s Office, but McCausland said the cause of death is not being released yet.

McCausland said detectives are still trying to positively identify the woman. The state police lab is also involved in the investigation.

“State police have received several calls from the public in the past 24 hours and are looking for more,” McCausland said in the release.

State police seized a black 2017 Chevrolet Impala in the investigation. The car was taken to the state police lab in Augusta to be analyzed. McCausland said investigators believe the Impala was involved in a crash at routes 9 and 193 on Tuesday evening. The Impala had Maryland license plates and had front-end damage.

“The car involved in that crash is connected to the victim,” McCausland said.

The woman’s body was found around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday by a passing driver. The accident scene and the place where the body was discovered are about 1½ miles apart.

Cherryfield is a town of about 1,200 residents in Washington County.

Anyone with information about the woman’s death is being asked to contact the state police in Bangor at 973-3700.
