2nd Friday Brunswick returns this summer, with some additional features and under new management.
Starting June 9, the arts-centric event will take over the downtown area of Brunswick, defined as the area from Pleasant Street to Mill Street and along Maine Street, every second Friday of the month from 4-7 p.m. through September.
“This is the first time that the Brunswick Downtown Association has done the event,” said Marketing & Communications Coordinator Patti Spencer-Yost. “We’ve taken over what was the 2nd Friday Artwalk, which was previously run by the Five Rivers Art Alliance, and they have since disbanded — that happened in October. So we had some town folk, officials and artists from the Five Rivers Art Alliance ask us if we would be willing to take the event over.”

WORK BY J. WALKER SYDNEY, pictured above, will be on display at the Bowdoin Museum of Art during 2nd Friday Brunswick.
“It’s kind of rebranded to be 2nd Friday Brunswick so it would be encompassing more than just ArtWalk, so it’s ArtWalk, music, theater, dance and all sorts of other things,” said Spencer-Yost. “This involves more folks in the community.”
The organization is also working to make the event more pedestrian friendly.
“One of the newest, most exciting things is that we’re going to be closing a portion of Lincoln Street to vehicles so we can open it up to pedestrians and have a couple of music venues out there,” said Spencer-Yost.
Food trucks and other vendors will be set up to cater to the crowds.
Musical acts will vary throughout the summer.
“Our headlining band that we have is this group called Los Galactacos and they are playing at Frontier on June 24,” said Membership and Events Coordinator Trevor Geiger. “We kind of have partnered with Frontier Cafe to sort of get them to loan us a different artist each month — either if they’re playing there that night or within a couple weeks of our ArtWalk, they’ll come and do a little set downtown and promote their show at Frontier.”
Beyond the main stage, the Brunswick Downtown Association has worked with a number of retailers to schedule pop-up artists all along the downtown area.
“The whole idea is that we’re trying to turn this into a really fun downtown party every month,” said Geige.
The dates for 2nd Friday Brunswick are as follows: June 9, July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8. To view the schedule for upcoming 2nd Friday Brunswick dates or to sign up to participate, visit the Brunswick Downtown Association’s website at brunswickdowntown.org.
