Biddeford City Council Bob Mills will resign his seat next month because he is moving out of the ward he has represented for the past 10 years.
Mills announced that his last day on the council will be June 9. He and his family are moving out of Ward 5 and he is considering taking a job with the school department, he said.
“It’s been a wonderful 10-plus years serving the City of Biddeford,” Mills wrote in a Facebook post announcing his decision.
Mills is in his fifth term representing the district that includes downtown, the mill district and some of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods. Mills, who has two sons with his wife, Heather, is known in Biddeford for his active presence in the community and for advocating for residents with limited resources.
Mayor Alan Casavant said he is starting the process to find a person to appoint to fill the remainder of Mills’ term, which ends in November. Casavant’s nominee must be approved by the City Council. Casavant said Mills has been a capable and dedicated public servant and has enjoyed working with him for the past five years.
“He’s a strong voice for his ward and this is a loss for the city,” Casavant said.
