Members of First Parish Church in Brunswick are moving forward with a $2.5 million capital campaign called Connecting Our Community. A kick-off celebration on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. will feature food, a scavenger hunt, hard hat tours of the sites of proposed changes and other events. Attendees can enjoy the festivities and learn more about the church’s capital campaign goals to fund improvements to the meetinghouse sanctuary and Pilgrim House.
Hector Casas and Mercie Normand are serving as campaign co-chairs.
“We are inspired to work on this campaign because it will build on First Parish’s long history of ministry and service in Brunswick,” Casas said.
“Last year’s feasibility study for the campaign pointed to our congregation’s readiness to strengthen our connections to spiritual life, to each other and to the wider community,” Normand added. “This campaign will fund changes to our facilities that reflect our values of being a church in the community.”
Renovations are aimed at create a more accessible pulpit area of the sanctuary. A ramp to the chancel, wider stairs across the front of the sanctuary and chairs in place of some transept pews aims to add flexibility for both Sunday services and for community concerts and events.
Exterior changes to Pilgrim House will include two new additions to make the building more accessible. Elevator service to all three levels of the building will be housed in a new entry pavilion facing the parking lot. ADA approved restrooms will be added to all levels. A community green space along Cleaveland Street will be open to the community. The green space will surround a new ramp access to a proposed lobby addition to the Cleaveland Street entrance.
The lobby will serve as an airlock for the building. Other energy efficient improvements to Pilgrim House include insulation and energy saving upgrades for windows and doors.
