PORTLAND

Creative works from Maine art students will be on display during the month of March at the Portland Museum of Art. The mixed-media exhibition, sponsored by Maine Art Education Association, highlights Youth Art Month — a national celebration of art education for children sponsored by the Council for Art Education. This year marks the PMA’s 23rd annual collaboration with the Maine Art Education Association.

The majority of the state is represented, with 92 artworks by students from seven counties in all grade levels. Art educators who are members of the Maine Art Education Association select one artwork per school for submission to the exhibition.

Guest speakers for the event include honorees as named by the Maine Art Education Association. The Art Advocate of the Year award recognizes the Saco Museum for its commitment to the local and statewide arts community through its exhibitions and programming. Teacher Suzanne Goulet of Waterville Senior High School will be speaking as MAEA’s 2017 Art Educator of the Year.

There will be an opening reception Saturday from 4-7:30 p.m. Presentation of certificates will start with kindergarten to third grade at 4: 30 p. m., fourth to seventh grade at 5: 30 p. m., and eighth to 12th grade at 6: 30 p. m. The exhibition is on view through April 2.

Admission to the Youth Art Month exhibition is free the day of the opening and children 14 years and under are always free at the PMA. Student artists and their families will also receive free admission to the PMA’s Family Day, “ Making Together” which takes place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and encourages families to gain inspiration from the exhibition and participate in a Pop-Up Studio to create unique works of art.
