BRUNSWICK

Family Day at the Peary- MacMillan Arctic Museum will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Children and their families are invited to explore and learn about the Arctic sky through hands-on experiments and art projects at the museum’s annual event.

During the summer, there are places in the Arctic where on certain days the sun doesn’t set — where it is daylight 24 hours straight. Learn the reason for this phenomenon with an easy experiment at the museum.

Strong wings and white feathers make the snowy owl a successful predator in the Arctic. Kids can build a snowy owl straw racer and learn how fast the bird of prey can dive out of the sky.

Aurora borealis, or “Northern Lights,” paints the Arctic night sky in shades of red, pink, green and yellow. At Family Day, kids and adults will have a chance to create the Northern Lights on paper to take home.

Family Day participants can get a look at snowflakes up close, then try their hand at making giant snowflakes to hang at home.

All activities will take place at the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, located in Hubbard Hall on the Bowdoin College campus in Brunswick. Family Day at the Arctic Museum is free and open to the public. For more information call the Museum at (207) 725-3416.
