ST. ALBANS — A fire that started during the early morning hours Friday left a home in ashes, according to Fire Chief Jason Emery.
The fire was reported 12:30 a.m. at 147 Springer Road, and it ended in a “total loss” for the homeowner, Emery said.
“It was pretty much collapsed when we got there,” he said.
The owner and sole occupant at the time was not injured and has insurance and relatives to stay with, Emery said.
Firefighters worked for about two hours at the scene but had to “just let (the house) burn,” he said, as the fire was too far along to fight. The cause of the fire is unknown, although the owner told fire officials that it started in the wall.
“There was so much damage, there’s nothing to look at,” Emery said. “It’s all ashes.”
Firefighters also faced a problem of getting through snow to connect to the hydrants. Emery said that fire departments throughout the state are in need of volunteers to shovel out around hydrants.
Fire departments from Hartland and Canaan also went to the scene, as well as ambulances from Corinna and Dexter.
