Yai Deng and Jack Meahl each sank a pair of free throws in the final minute to help seventh-seeded Waynflete hold on for a 51-46 win over No. 10 Old Orchard Beach in a Class C South boys’ basketball prelim Thursday.
Ian Regan sparked OOB’s fourth-quarter rally, hitting three 3-pointers as the Seagulls (8-11) cut their deficit to one with a minute remaining.
Regan finished with 23 points.
Waynflete, the defending regional champion, advances to face No. 2 Richmond in the quarterfinals Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.
BOOTHBAY 76, TELSTAR 50: Kyle Ames scored 11 of his 13 points in the first quarter as the sixth-seeded Seahawks (12-7) took control early against the 11th-seeded Rebels (7-12) in a Class C South prelim at Boothbay Harbor.
Carter Babcock and Elijah Gudroe each finished with 15 points and Jacob Leonard tossed in 14 for Boothbay, which led 22-10 after one quarter.
Jarrett Bean led Telstar with 20 points. Tanner Wheeler chipped in with 15.
The Seahawks will meet third-seeded Madison in the quarterfinals Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.
HALL-DALE 82, DIRIGO 42: The fifth-seeded Bulldogs (14-5) raced to an early 14-point lead, then held No. 5 Dirigo (5-14) without a field goal for more than 10 minutes spanning the second and third quarters on the way to a Class C South preliminary-round win in Farmingdale.
Five players scored in double figures for Hall-Dale, which shot 56 percent (32 of 57) from the field. Top reserve Jett Boyer led the way with 16 points, going 4 for 4 from 3-pointer range. Ashtyn Abbott added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Tyler Nadeau scored 12 points, and Austin Stebbins and Alex Byron each had 10.
Hall-Dale will play fourth-seeded North Yarmouth Academy in a quarterfinal at 8 p.m. Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.
Cooper Chiasson led Dirigo with 20 points.
WINSLOW 51, MCI 44: Sixth-seeded Winslow (15-4) erased a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter, rallying past the 11th-seeded Huskies (6-13) in a Class B North prelim at Winslow.
The Black Raiders trailed 36-27 after a layup by MCI’s Caleb Romanov with 6:35 remaining, but they fought back to tie the game at 39-all on a putback by Jack Morneault, then took the lead on Keanu Earle’s three-point play.
Spencer Miranda scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for Winslow, which will be back in action Friday afternoon against No. 3 Central in the regional quarterfinals at Bangor’s Cross Insurance Center.
Morneault added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
CONY 62, ERSKINE ACADEMY 47: Austin Parlin sank five 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the seventh-seeded Rams (10-9) over the 10th-seeded Eagles (8-11) in a Class A North prelim in Augusta.
Jordan Roddy added 11 points for Cony, which advanced to meet No. 2 Hampden Academy in the regional quarterfinals Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.
The Rams took charge in the second quarter, scoring 23 points to open a 37-23 halftime lead.
Noah Bonsant scored 13 points and Jack Jowett had 12 for Erskine.
BOYS’ HOCKEY
CAPE ELIZABETH 7, GARDINER 6: Philip Tarling scored his second goal of the game 5:29 into overtime as the Capers (10-5) beat the Tigers (12-5) at Troubh Ice Arena.
Gardiner’s Sloan Berthiaume tied the game with an unassisted goal with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
James Boeschenstein had a pair of goals for Cape Elizabeth, Ryan Collins and Gus Frankwicz each added a goal and an assist, and Sean Agrondia also scored.
Gardiner got two goals from Ryan Kelly and a goal and an assist from Joe Clark. Cam Bigelow and Connor Manter were the other goal scorers.
MASSABESIC/OLD ORCHARD BEACH/BONNY EAGLE 4, SOUTH PORTLAND/FREEPORT/WAYNFLETE 0: Tyler Ouellette scored one goal and set up another as the Mustangs (10-4-2) beat the Red Riots (5-9-1) at Troubh Ice Arena.
Ouellette opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 2:44 into the contest. Brandon Caron and Tanner McClure scored in the second period, and Wyatt Blanchette added a third-period goal.
