Bad third quarter dooms Red Claws at Delaware

The Maine Red Claws went cold in the second half Tuesday night, falling to the Delaware 87ers 123-101 Tuesday night in Newark, Delaware.

The Claws, who have lost two straight, had a 58-53 lead at halftime, but shot 4 for 22 in the third quarter.

The 87ers (18-16), however, were hot in the third quarter, scoring 40 points – 12 points from Aaron Harrison.

Maine (22-14) scored 15 third-quarter points.

James Webb III led all scorers with 40 points and had 13 boards for Delaware.

Jalen Jones led the Red Claws with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

The NBA Development League is changing its name starting next season to the NBA Gatorade League, a deal that will include a rebranding that will affect the league logo, basketballs, jerseys, on-court signage and digital properties.

Long viewed as a proving and testing ground of sorts for the NBA, what has been known as the D-League will also get to take advantage of Gatorade’s Sports Science Institute.

MLS: Seattle Sounders star Clint Dempsey said the symptoms that eventually led him to being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat first surfaced last February but it wasn’t until late summer that it became serious enough to affect his ability to play.

Dempsey spoke to the media for the first time since he was diagnosed with the irregular heartbeat in August and his season was shut down. He was a spectator as the Sounders went on to win their first MLS Cup title and missed the beginning of World Cup qualifying for the United States.

“It was a heart issue. It’s something that’s difficult to kind of explain,” Dempsey said. “But at the same time I’m not feeling those things anymore and I’m happy to be back playing.”
