SOUTH PORTLAND — The City Council is set to discuss a renter-protection proposal and potential marijuana business regulations at a workshop starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Redbank Community Center.

For the last year, the council has been considering various issues related to the lack of affordable rental housing in the city. The workshop is to be held in the Red Bank neighborhood instead of City Hall because, in part, many renters live on the city’s west side.

The renter-protection proposal would establish rent control, prevent landlords from refusing to rent to housing-voucher holders, eliminate no-cause evictions and limit other evictions, among other things. The proposal was drafted by Pine Tree Legal Assistance, a nonprofit agency that provides legal help to low-income people.

The council also will start reviewing potential licensing requirements and zoning regulations for businesses that grow or sell marijuana. Maine voters approved recreational marijuana use via referendum in November. The council adopted a six-month moritorium in December to develop local ordinances related to the new law.

The meeting at 95 MacArthur Circle West also will include a discussion of food trucks authorized to operate in designated public areas.
