NEW YORK — Ryan Strome and Johnny Boychuk scored in the third period, Thomas Greiss made 28 saves and the New York Islanders beat the league-leading Washington Capitals 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Strome got his first goal since Dec. 31 to put New York up 2-1 6:31 into the period. Anthony Beauvillier stole the puck behind the Capitals net and passed it to Brock Nelson. The Islanders’ forward sent a quick pass to Strome, and he tapped it past goalie Philipp Grubauer.
Boychuk scored into an empty net with 1:08 left, and Alan Quine also scored for New York.
The Islanders are 5-0-1 under interim coach Doug Weight since firing Jack Capuano, a former UMaine player.
Alex Ovechkin scored his 24th goal of the season with 47 seconds left, and Evgeny Kuznetsov also had a goal for Washington. Grubauer made 26 saves.
BLUE JACKETS 6, RANGERS 4: Seth Jones scored twice, Alexander Wennberg had a goal and two assists and Columbus led by six goals and held on to win in New York.
HURRICANES 5, FLYERS 1: Sebastian Aho had his first career hat trick and added an assist as host Carolina snapped a five-game slide.
Aho, a 19-year-old from Finland, became the first Carolina rookie to record a hat trick since Erik Cole in the 2001-02 season. It was the third multiple-goal game of the season for Aho, who has 15 goals.
PENGUINS 4, PREDATORS 2: Patric Hornqvist scored twice, Matt Murray stopped 37 shots and Pittsburgh returned from the All-Star break with a win at home.
Trevor Daley and Chris Kunitz also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who had lost two in a row. Sidney Crosby picked up an assist on Hornqvist’s first goal for the 994th point of his career.
CANADIENS 5, SABRES 2: Max Pacioretty had a hat trick, Carey Price made 37 saves and Montreal beat visiting Buffalo.
David Desharnais and Paul Byron also scored for Montreal. Alexander Radulov and Phillip Danault each had two assists.
Dmitry Kulikov and Brian Gionta scored for Buffalo late in the third period, and Robin Lehner stopped 30 shots.
DEVILS 4, RED WINGS 3: Kyle Palmieri scored twice and Cory Schneider made 27 saves, helping New Jersey win at home.
JETS 5, BLUES 3: Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist, Jacob Trouba scored a key third-period goal, and Winnipeg won in St. Louis.
PANTHERS 6, SENATORS 5: Jonathan Marchessault scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period to lift Florida over visiting Ottawa.
NOTES
ISLANDERS: The Islanders have stabilized their goaltending situation for the next few seasons by signing Thomas Greiss to a $10 million, three-year contract extension.
RANGERS: The Rangers signed Coach Alain Vigneault to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2019-20 season.
The 55-year-old Vigneault was under contract through next season under the five-year deal he signed in June 2013.
