Linda Bean is like the offbeat aunt at family holidays whose ideas are met with eye rolls. She’s been trounced at election time, just as, I’m sure, she is most likely ignored at L.L. Bean board meetings. So this dumb boycott move is embarrassing to us old liberals.

The boycott is undemocratic, unfair and misguided. But the worst aspect is the inappropriate comparison of the boycott to denial of climate change, disparaging Mexicans and Muslims and haste to revoke health insurance.

What West Coast liberal and boycott organizer Shannon Coulter proposes is bad, but it’s nothing compared with what the Republican Party is poised to do to our entire country.
