SACO — Milton J. Mitchell, 90, of Saco, passed away on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

He was a lifelong resident of Saco, born on Jan. 22, 1926, a son of Joseph and Sophie (Cash) Mitchell. He attended Saco schools and Thornton Academy.

In his youth, he was a paperboy and throughout his life he loved to point out the houses on his route and named the customers. As a teenager, he worked as a clerk at Scammon’s store, a favorite Saco meeting spot in the 1940’s and 50’s. During World War II, he joined the Merchant Marines.

Milton was employed by Diamond Match / Diamond National Lumber Company in Biddeford and retired from Northeast Gas Company/Liquid Carbide Company in Saco.

From his youth, Milton was an avid Thornton Academy sports fan. He never missed a game and enjoyed the away games with his buddies Ernie Huot and Alec Garon. He was never more content than when sitting in his lounge chair watching the Patriots, Red Soxs and Celtics.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed gardening, sometimes having two vegetable gardens. He often left vegetables at the door steps of family and friends.

In 1950, he married Iola Young, a nurse at Webber Hospital. She predeceased him in 1976. In 1977, he married Yvonne Garon Estes. They enjoyed 33 years of marriage together. She predeceased him in 2010. He was also predeceased by five siblings, Ruth Fleming, Barbara Mitchell, Vera Benoit, Bertha Hill and George Mitchell.

He is survived by his daughter Ruth Mitchell of Saco, step daughter Pamela Davis of Saco, and step son Robert Estes and his wife Sandra of North Waterford, Maine. He is also survived by four step-grandchildren Billie-Jean Steere, Robert Davis, Phillip Estes, Sarah Joseph, seven step-great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by the Mitchell nieces and nephews who visited him on holidays and each summer.
