Red Claws hold off drive by Grand Rapids in fourth
Jalen Jones scored 21 points, Marcus Georges-Hunt had 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Maine Red Claws held off the Grand Rapids Drive for a 106-104 victory at Walker, Michigan, on Friday night.
Ray McCallum finished with a triple-double for the Drive with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.
Maine opened 95-83 lead, its biggest of the game, with 5:29 remaining on a 3-pointer by Arthur Edwards.
The Drive fought their way back with Kevin Murphy scoring 10 of his 27 points in the final quarter. His 3-pointer with 31 seconds left made it 106-104, but Jordan Crawford missed a layup with 1.2 seconds left.
n The Boston Celtics assigned rookie point guard Demetrius Jackson to the Red Claws Friday. He is expected to be in uniform this weekend in Portland.
COLLEGES
FOOTBALL: Jonathan Barnes kicked a game-ending 32-yard field goal to send Louisiana Tech (9-5) to a 48-45 victory over Navy (9-5) in the Armed Forces Bowl at Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday.
The Bulldogs drove for the winning score after Navy freshman quarterback Malcolm Perry ran 30 yards for a touchdown on his only play with 3:46 left.
n David Washington threw three touchdowns passes, Ray Lawry ran for 133 yards and Old Dominion (10-3) won in the first bowl appearance in program history, earning a 24-20 victory over Eastern Michigan (7-6) in the Bahamas Bowl at Nassau.
n Michigan will be without wide receiver Grant Perry when it plays Florida State in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.
The university suspended the 19-year-old after he was arraigned on four charges regarding an alleged sexual assault that occurred in October.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Tarik Phillip scored 16 points and No. 11 West Virginia (11-1) pulled away from Northern Kentucky (9-4) for a 92-61 win at home.
The Mountaineers shot 52 percent from the field in their seventh straight win.
n Reserve D’Mitrik Trice scored 14 points and Vitto Brown added 11 points and eight rebounds as No. 14 Wisconsin (11-2) breezed to a 90-37 win over Florida A&M (2-11) at Madison, Wisconsin.
BASEBALL
MAJOR LEAGUES: Outfielder Ben Revere agreed to a $4 million, one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels, three weeks after Washington allowed him to become a free agent.
The 28-year-old was slowed by an oblique injury this season, batting .217 with and 24 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 350 at-bats for the Nationals.
n The Tigers brought back catcher Alex Avila with a $2 million, one-year contract to back up James McCann.
Avila played for Detroit from 2009-15 before spending last season with the White Sox.
n Outfielder Ender Inciarte, who won his first Gold Glove this season, avoided salary arbitration with the Braves, agreeing to a $30,525,000, five-year contract.
TENNIS
INJURIES: Petra Kvitova was released from a hospital on Friday, three days after surgery for injuries sustained in an attack at her home in the Czech town of Prostejov.
Kvitova said she was told by the surgeon who operated on her in a specialized clinic that her recovery is “fine and without complications.”
n Madison Keys says she will miss the Australian Open after having wrist surgery.
The 21-year-old American, ranked No. 8 in the world, said she had the arthroscopic procedure three days after the WTA Finals in October.
