
Center in Biddeford. She was born in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, May 31, 1921, the daughter of Ralph and Ruth Pickard Cox.
She attended Chelmsford Schools and worked at several of the American Red Cross stations. Barbara attended nursing schools and a worked at Fort Devens Hospital for several years.
Coming to Maine in 1946, she stayed at home with her family and later worked at the Elms Nursing home in Old Orchard Beach for over 22 years, retiring in 1986.
Barbara was a member of the Old Orchard Beach Rebekah Lodge, Pocohontas Club, the Old Orchard Beach American Legion Post 57 and the Four and Eight Club of the American Legion. She was also a member of AARP, The Washington Ave. United Methodist Church of Old Orchard Beach, The Salvation Army Home League and volunteered at The Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough and Togus VA Hospital.
She is preceded in death by: her husband, Stillman Gilbert; a sister, Frances Poteette; and a brother, Wesley Cox.
She is survived by: two sons, Wayne of Dryden, and Douglas Gilbert of Old Orchard Beach; a brother, Allan Cox of Dracut, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec.17, at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home and Cremation 365 Main St, Saco.
Inurnment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, (Deering Park).
