BUXTON – Noble “Eugene” Steeves, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep Dec. 7, 2016 at the Veteran’s Administration Togus Springs Hospice in Augusta.

Eugene was born in Waterville, Maine, Dec. 24, 1927 to Noble and Annie Steeves.

He grew up in Buxton and helped run the family gas station, graduating from Samuel D. Hanson High School in 1946. He then worked locally as a mechanic until he enlisted in the 8th Army in 1950. He served in the 54th Engineer Field Maintenance Company, finishing with the Korean Military Advisory Group in 1953.

Upon returning home, he married Kathleen L. Tapley in 1954. He worked as a woodsman for 15 years before becoming a diesel mechanic for 20 years. After retirement, he built a greenhouse and he and Kathleen ran a roadside vegetable stand, having been known to raise as many as 500 tomato plants in a season. Their children will never forget their strong work ethic.

Eugene was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He and his family built the family hunting camp in 1968. There were many Thanksgiving meals prepared at camp while the family hunted. The camp is still enjoyed to this day.

He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen who passed away Dec. 10, 2015, a son, Dennis, a brother, Vernon. and a sister, Viola.

He is survived by his four children, Roxanne Grant of Farmington, Bruce Steeves and his wife Colleen of Raymond, Vivian Parenteau and her husband, John, of Windham, and Laurie Steeves of Brownfield, a brother, Merle Steeves of Alabama, a sister, Jane Sexton of Florida; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all the staff at Togus Springs Hospice for their kindness and the incredible loving care Noble received.

Visiting hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016 with a Funeral service immediately following at the Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 13 Portland Road, Buxton (Bar Mills). A celebration of life will follow at the Davis Room, 935 Long Plains Road, Buxton. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the South Buxton Cemetery (Woodman section). Rev. Gerald Scribner is officiating.
