STANDISH — Marc Corey scored 16 points Tuesday night as St. Joseph’s opened its men’s basketball season by rallying from a late 11-point deficit to beat Maine Maritime, 73-71.
The Monks trailed 62-51 with 9:33 remaining before closing the game on a 22-9 run.
Maine Maritime guard Brendan Newcomb led all scorers with 26 points, 23 in the second half. He shot 6 for 9 on 3-pointers.
(2) KENTUCKY 69, (13) MICHIGAN STATE 48: Freshman Malik Monk scored 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting from 3-point range, and Isaiah Briscoe added 21 to lead the Wildcats (3-0) over the Spartans (0-2) at Madison Square Garden.
BAYLOR 66, (4) OREGON 49: Johnathan Motley scored 17 points in his season debut and the Bears (2-0) got a big early-season victory over the visiting Ducks (1-1).
The Ducks played without Dillon Brooks, their 6-foot-7 junior forward who was their leading scorer last season but is still recovering from foot surgery during the offseason.
(5) NORTH CAROLINA 93, LONG BEACH STATE 67: Joel Berry II scored 23 points and the host Tar Heels (3-0) shot 53 percent to beat the 49ers (1-2).
(8) VIRGINIA 72, ST. FRANCIS (N.Y.) 32: Austin Nichols scored 11 points in his debut and the Cavaliers (2-0) crushed the visiting Terriers (0-2).
The Cavaliers held the Terriers scoreless for a stretch of more than 10 minutes in the first half and scored 20 consecutive points to open a 35-11 lead.
(18) SYRACUSE 90, HOLY CROSS 46: Andrew White scored 19 points, Tyler Lydon had 17, and the Orange (2-0) went on a 14-0 run in the first half to take control and overpower the visiting Crusaders (0-2).
Syracuse shot 61 percent from the field and was 13 for 23 on 3-pointers.
(22) CREIGHTON 79, (9) WISCONSIN 67: Khyri Thomas scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, breaking open a close game with a three-point play and 3-pointer on consecutive possessions, and the Bluejays (2-0) beat the Badgers (1-1) at Omaha, Nebraska.
Maurice Watson Jr. had 17 points and 10 assists and Marcus Foster added 15 points for the Bluejays.
Bronson Koenig scored 21 points and Nigel Hayes had 16 points to lead the Badgers.
WOMEN
ST. JOSEPH’S 64, MAINE MARITIME 48: Kelsi McNamara scored 17 points and dished out nine assists to lead the Monks (1-0) over the Mariners (0-1) in Standish.
Six players scored in the first quarter for the Monks, who led 18-9.
Monks reserve Hannah Marks finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, shooting 3 for 8 from 3-point range.
Alayne Felix led the Mariners with 12 points.
(13) TENNESSEE 83, ETSU 58: Diamond DeShields had 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Lady Vols (3-0) to a win over the Buccaneers (1-1) at Johnson City, Tennessee.
(21) WEST VIRGINIA 95, HOWARD 49: Tynice Martin hit all 10 of her free throws and scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Mountaineers (2-0) over the visiting Bison (0-2).
