Claws surrender 152 points in losing for the first time
Kyle Wiltjer scored a game-high 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2-0) over the Red Claws (2-1) 152-128 Tuesday night in Hidalgo, Texas.
Jalen Jones led the Red Claws with 27 points.
The Vipers’ 152 points set a Red Claws franchise record for points by an opposing team.
The Red Claws have lost 15 straight to the Vipers.

WORLD CUP: The United States put itself in a deep hole in World Cup qualifying with one of its worst performances in decades.
Taking advantage of defensive mistakes, Costa Rica routed the U.S. 4-0 at San Jose, Costa Rica, to drop the Americans to 0-2 for the first time in the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region.
Johan Venegas scored in the 43rd minute, Cristian Bolanos doubled the lead in the 69th and second-half substitute Joel Campbell beat beleagured goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 74th and 77th minutes in the worst margin of defeat for the U.S. in a qualifier since a 5-1 defeat at Mexico in November 1980.
GOLF
U.S. SENIOR OPEN: John Elway was named honorary chairman of the 39th U.S. Senior Open when it comes to Colorado Springs in 2018 tournament at the Broadmoor Golf Club.
The ever-competitive Elway also hinted he might try to qualify for the tournament.
TENNIS
ATP FINALS: Second-ranked Novak Djokovic beat Milos Raonic 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) to qualify for the semifinals in London and improve his record against the Canadian to 8-0.
Djokovic is 2-0 at the season-ending tournament, and will retake the top ranking from Andy Murray if he does better this week. Murray is 1-0.
OBIT: Gardnar Mulloy, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame who won 129 U.S. national titles and played competitively into his 90s, has died at age 102.
The longtime Miami resident died Monday night, said his wife, Jackie.
BASEBALL
WBC: The United States will open its World Baseball Classic schedule against Colombia on March 10, play the defending champion Dominican Republic the following day and close Group C of the first round against Canada on March 12.
COLLEGE
NCAA: The NCAA says 77 percent of black men’s Division I basketball players who entered college in 2009 earned a degree within six years, up five points from a year earlier and a record high.
The NCAA said that improvement helped the Graduation Success Rates of all student-athletes match last year’s record high of 86 percent graduating within six years.
SIGNINGS: The University of Maine announced the signings of seven players in two sports.
Isaiah White, a guard from Harford Community College in Maryland, was signed to the men’s basketball team.
The baseball team signed six players: Alex Mckenney, Kyle Ball, Peter Kemble, Ben Terwilliger, Nick Cardieri and Jackie Urbaez.
