The firearm season for hunting deer is set to begin Saturday, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Non-residents can begin hunting deer with a firearm on Monday. The firearms hunting season ends Saturday, Nov. 26.
“Opening day of deer season is an eagerly awaited event that draws together family and friends year after year,” IFW Commissioner Chandler Woodcock said in a news release. “It’s a Maine tradition filled with memories and anticipation that encompasses generations.”
Maine has over 225,000 licensed hunters, a number that has increased in each of the past five years. Woodcock said hunters should see more deer than last year because last winter was warmer than usual.
Biologists are forecasting that more than 20,325 deer will be harvested this year, slightly below the eight-year average of 20,900.
