Biddeford Historical Society will host its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Old Meetinghouse on Route 9.

A celebration of the 400th anniversary of Richard Vines’ expedition to Maine will be a part of this event. Tea will be served.

‘Maker Mondays’ offered

University of Maine Cooperative Extension Cumberland County is offering three new free “4-H Maker Monday” programs for youth, meeting from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12 at UMaine Extension Cumberland, 75 Clearwater Drive, Suite 104.

4-H community education assistant Sara Conant will offer a themed-activity for youth ages 9-18.

• In October, participants will paint their own Halloween door hanger made of four wooden squares and a Halloween ribbon.

• In November, participants will learn how to bake easy pumpkin spice cupcakes and use basic cake decorating tips to frost a turkey onto each cupcake.

• In December, participants will learn how to make snowflake window clings and a winter-themed mason jar luminary.

Current 4-H enrollment is not necessary for participation in any of the Maker Monday Programs. Participants may sign up for one session or all three.

Sewing, craft group meeting

The Otisfield Sewing and Craft Group will meet from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church, off Route 121.

Members will gather with others who enjoy doing individual projects such as knitting, crocheting, quilting, card making and painting. Fall and winter sessions meet every Wednesday except for the third Wednesday of each month.

Elder abuse prevention

Our Lady of Hope Parish of St. Pius X Church at Portland and the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord at St. Christopher Church at York will host programs in October designed to educate elders and their families about how to protect themselves from unscrupulous individuals and a variety of scams.

The program “Preventing Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation” will be hosted by Judith Shaw, the securities administrator for the Maine Office of Securities.

Dates are set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Hope Parish of St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave., and again at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord at St. Christopher Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York.

Sauna season kick-off

Nurture Through Nature Retreat Center, located on the southwestern base of Pleasant Mountain, is kicking off its community sauna season by opening its Finnish-style, wood-fired sauna for the public, from 4 to 6 p.m. each Saturday through March.

Intelligence group talk

The Association of Former Intelligence Officers will host the talk “The Afghanistan Briar Patch” with former Ambassador Charles Dunbar at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brick Store Museum conference center, at 4 Dane St.

Dunbar, of Brunswick, served in various positions with the State Department and the United Nations. He spent many years working in Afghanistan, has been an ambassador to Qatar and Yemen and served on other assignments in Iran, Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania. He now teaches at the Midcoast Senior College in Brunswick.

His talk will detail Taliban insurgencies and refugees from that area. A Q&A will follow.

Super moon hike scheduled

Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust will lead a hike from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday to watch the rising of October’s super moon from the summit of Great Pond Mountain.

This roughly 2.5-mile moderately difficult walk will start near sunset and return after dark. Participants will meet at Craig Brook Fish Hatchery on Hatchery Road to carpool to the trailhead.

The free lecture “Slavery in Old Kittery & Berwick: The Truth Revealed” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at STAR Theatre, located at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road.

Historian Patricia Q. Wall will discuss new information from her forthcoming book, “Lives of Consequence: Blacks in Early Kittery and Berwick in the Massachusetts Province of Maine.” Based on six years of research, Wall’s findings counter the old myth of slavery’s scarcity.

Harvest dance for shelter

The seventh annual Harvest Dance, benefiting York County Shelter programs’ Thanksgiving Food Box distribution, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St.

The Thomaston Historical Society will present a talk by Capt. Annie Mahle on “At Home At Sea: Living on a Windjammer” Tuesday evening at the Thomaston Historical Society Museum at Knox Street.

Full Moon Fling scheduled

The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will host a Full Moon Fling at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 290 Norlands Road.

The public is invited to come and dance in the spirit of 19th-century New England under the October full moon. The barn dance will feature live music, seasonal food prepared by a chef, a comedy improv show with the famed Teachers Lounge Mafia and raffles.
