St. Joseph’s earns a 2-1 field hockey win in OT

Libby Pomerleau scored her second goal of the game 4:24 into overtime, giving St. Joseph’s College a 2-1 field hockey victory over Lasell at Standish on Friday.

Pomerleau put the Monks (3-3, 2-1 GNAC) on the board in the 15th minute when she converted a cross from Kelsey Dumond.

The Lasers (6-3, 1-1) tied it with 16 seconds left in the first half on a goal by Erica Connors.

EUROPEAN OPEN: Frenchman Alexander Levy set a course record and opened a six-shot lead before fading light shortened the second round at Bad Griesbach, Germany.

Levy will have to complete his round on the ninth hole on Saturday. Half the field will go out early Saturday for the second round, before the third round can start. Morning fog has delayed start of play on both days so far.

RYDER CUP: Team captain Davis Love III feels good about the American team, saying on a radio show that “we’re a great team. This is the best golf team maybe ever.”

The 1981 Ryder Cup team that beat Europe 181/2 to 91/2 is regarded as the best in U.S. history, with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Ray Floyd, Hale Irwin and Johnny Miller.

Love’s confidence faces a stern test, however, as Europe is going for its fourth straight victory next week at Hazeltine in Minnesota.

ST. PETERSBURG OPEN: U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka took a step closer to a second straight title as he advanced to the semifinals in Russia.

The top-seeded Swiss took about an hour to dismiss Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-2.

Third-seeded Tomas Berdych also reached the semifinals by beating Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-4, 6-3.

PAN PACIFIC OPEN: Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Rio Olympics gold medalist Monica Puig to set up a semifinal showdown with Caroline Wozniacki in Tokyo.

Wozniacki appeared back near her best after a succession of ankle, knee and bicep injuries, beating Polish qualifier Magda Linette 6-4, 6-3.

GUANGZHOU OPEN: Defending champion Jelena Jankovic will have another shot at the title after defeating Ana Konjuh of Croatia 7-5, 7-6 (7) in China.

The second-seeded Serb has not lost a set this week.

CANADA: Sidney Crosby and five former Canadian hockey greats are being honored with their own postage stamps.

Canada Post unveiled the fourth issue in its five-year NHL stamp series at the Hockey Hall of Fame. The series also features Hall of Famers Phil Esposito, Guy Lafleur, Darryl Sittler, Mark Messier and Steve Yzerman.

 Gordie Howe’s family is ready to celebrate his life in his hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The city declared Sunday as Thank You, Mr. Hockey Day, and events are planned to honor the hockey great who died in June at age 88.

Howe spent 26 seasons in the National Hockey League and six in the World Hockey Association. He is still No. 2 on the NHL’s goals list behind Wayne Gretzky.

DIVERSITY: The U.S. Olympic Committee and the sports it oversees are behind the curve when it comes to placing women and minorities in key coaching and leadership positions, according to a set of “scorecards” the USOC has compiled over the past three years.
