BIDDEFORD — The University of New England scored a pair of quick goals early in the second half to pull away for a 4-1 field hockey win over Endicott in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Tuesday at Biddeford.
Nicole Matarozzo gave UNE (6-1, 2-0 CCC) the early lead with an off-balance shot into the left corner off a feed from Vonde Saunders 9:34 into the game.
Nicki Thurston answered for Endicott (3-3, 2-1) as the teams went to intermission at 1-1.
In the second half, Marge Gardiner gave the Nor’easters the lead off an assist from Kersey Boulay and Vonde Saunder added an unassisted goal 38 seconds later.
Hannah Buckley rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal.
Cheka Ventura stopped six shots for the Gulls and Holly Smith stopped two for UNE.
ST. JOSEPH’S 4, SPRINGFIELD 2: Libby Pomerleau teamed up with Kelsey Dumond for the second time in the game, this time with 9:29 left in regulation, to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Monks (2-3) past the Pride (3-3) in a nonconference match at Springfield, Massachusetts.
Pomerleau gave St. Joseph’s the early lead as she took advantage of a turnover caused by Dumond, who set her up all alone in front of the keeper. Samantha Silva extended the lead at 22:32, getting assists from Pomerleau and Kara Kelly for a 2-0 St. Joseph’s lead at the half.
Maddy Beaulier added a second-half goal for the Monks.
BOWDOIN 6, COLBY 1: Kimmy Ganong scored two second-half goals and Elizabeth Bennewitz had two assists as the Polar Bears cruised to a win at Waterville.
Johna Cook gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game off a feed from Rachel Mann, but Colby responded five minutes later with an unassisted goal from Kallie Hutchinson. Emily McColgan scored late in the first half to give Bowdoin a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Bowdoin ran away with the game on four second-half goals. Ganong scored the first two off feeds from Bennewitz, and Juliana Fiore and Mettler Growney each added unassisted goals.
PLYMOUTH ST. 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Nicole Burgess scored an unassisted goal three minutes into the game and the Panthers (4-2, 3-1 ECAC) held on to beat the Huskies (3-5, 2-2 LEC) at Gorham.
Lindsay Jackson scored USM’s goal off a deflection in the 68th minute, and Amanda Kasbohm made 10 saves for the Huskies.

BATES 1, BOWDOIN 1: Nate Merchant scored an unassisted goal with 4:03 left to play in regulation as the Bobcats (2-2-2, 0-2-1 NESCAC) came back to salvage a draw with the Polar Bears (3-1-1, 1-1-1) in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match at Brunswick.
Levi Morant scored on a feed from Ethan Ellsworth for Bowdoin in the 80th minute after the teams had played a tightly-contested game.
Robbie Montanaro stopped seven shots for Bates, and Stevie Van Siclen had five saves for the Polar Bears.
FOOTBALL
FLORIDA STATE: Quarterback Malik Henry returned to the team. Henry was suspended by Coach Jimbo Fisher on Aug. 20 for a violation of team rules. Fisher has refused to say why he suspended Henry.
The freshman is a highly touted part of the 2016 recruiting class that’s ranked among the nation’s best.
