Huskies, Nor’easters play to 1-1 tie in men’s soccer
Hany Ramadan scored in the 48th minute to tie the game for the University of Southern Maine in its 1-1 double-overtime tie with the University of New England in a men’s soccer game in Biddeford on Monday.
Lee Esposito scored on a pass from Jose Escamilla to put the Nor’easters (1-2-4) up 1-0 in the fourth minute.
The Huskies (0-4-3) responded in the second half, as Ramadan scored on an empty net after a defensive mistake.
Huskies goalie Simon Hulbert recorded seven saves. Tom Benoit stopped eight shots for the Nor’easters.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Devon Wolfenden scored with 33 seconds remaining in the first half to lead UNE to a 2-1 win over Bates in Biddeford.
The Bobcats (2-4, 0-3 NESCAC) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Riley Turcotte in the 14th minute. The Nor’easters (5-1, 2-0 CCC) tied the match in the 37th minute as Anna Michaud scored on a pass from Brionne Turcotte.
Wolfenden’s goal was assisted by Ashley Sherman.
Bobcats goalie Sarah McCarthy recorded three saves. Brielle Robinson stopped six shots for the Nor’easters.
BASKETBALL
NBA: Milwaukee agreed to a contract extension with Giannis Antetokounmpo, locking up one of the most versatile players in the NBA in a deal reportedly worth $100 million over four years.
The 6-foot-11 Antetokounmpo averaged 16.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists last season, his third in the NBA.
• The New York Knicks re-signed veteran forward Lou Amundson.
The 6-foot-9 Amundson has played for 10 teams. He appeared in 70 games over the last two seasons with New York. He averaged 1.8 points and 1.7 rebounds over seven minutes a game last season.
• The lowly Philadelphia 76ers are set to open their practice facility this week in Camden, New Jersey – likely to be recognized as the top-tier standard for the NBA. It comes with two regulation-size basketball courts, a 2,800-square-foot locker room, corporate sponsorship and a chef plucked from one of Philly’s top restaurants.
The Sixers believe the state-of-the art equipment and sports science stations could help lure free agents who might need a final incentive to sign with the worst team in the NBA.
SOCCER
U.S. MEN: The United States will play its home World Cup qualifier against Mexico on Nov. 11 in Columbus, Ohio, for the fifth straight time.
The decision comes after four consecutive 2-0 home wins at Columbus in qualifiers against Mexico.
Seeking its eighth straight World Cup berth, the U.S. opens the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region at home, then plays four days later at Costa Rica.
OLYMPICS
RIO 2016: Fifteen of the 558 athletes in the U.S. delegation at the Rio Olympics – or slightly less than 3 percent – had therapeutic-use exemptions in force during the games.
The exemptions, known as TUEs, came under increased scrutiny last week after Russian hackers broke into the database of the World Anti-Doping Agency and posted confidential medical information online from some athletes.
TUEs let athletes use otherwise-banned substances to treat long-standing medical conditions, such as attention-deficit disorder and asthma.
