KENNEBUNKPORT — Construction of an addition and renovations to the town’s police station are expected to be finished in October, according to the town manager.

Residents at the 2015 town meeting voted to allow the town to borrow up to $400,000 for an addition to the existing police station at 101 Main St.

Construction began in May on the 1,513-square-foot addition, which was designed by Port City Architecture, according to Planning Board documents.

“The addition will give town staff the ability to better handle emergency situations, conduct training, and facilitate meetings,” Police Chief Craig Sanford stated in a letter to residents in last year’s annual report.

Town Manager Laurie Smith said in a phone interview Sept. 6 that work is expected to be completed in mid- October.

“They certainly will improve our operations,” she said of the improvements.

The addition, which is in the front of the building, will add an emergency operations room, said Smith.

Currently, she said, there’s no room for a large number of people to gather or meet.

The addition would provide space for public safety officials from supporting agencies to meet in the event of an emergency, and for press conferences, public meetings and department trainings. Currently department trainings must be held in the garage during warm weather, said Smith.

There would also be space for conducting interviews and for a women’s locker room, as well as updates to the men’s locker room, said Smith.

Renovations to the building will include electrical and HVAC updates and a new roof, she said.
