Join the Patten Free Library for the final 3rd Friday Art Walk in Bath from 4-7pm on Friday.
Patten Free has featured eight different artists during this Art Walk season — Brown Leetham, Elaine and Jimmy Reed, Valerie Michaels, Library staffers Robin Haynes, Josephina Gasca and Kathryn McCoig and Joy Hare.
For the last 3rd Friday Art Walk Patten Free will be hosting Joy Hare, a recent addition to the Bath community and art scene. Hare will be reading from her recently published poetry memoir “Night of the Full Sturgeon Moon” in the Community Room, where her artwork will be displayed until Oct. 3. Hare has been showing her art for more than 20 years in various Maine galleries including The Grand in Ellsworth, First Light gallery in Belfast, The Gallery at Caterpillar Hill, and Deer Isle and Castine Arts associations. A portion of any of Hare’s artwork or poetry books sold during the Art Walk will be donated to the library.
The library also has an extensive collection of art hanging throughout the building. The historic Reading Room includes a portrait of Maine’s first governor William King, who helped develop Bath’s downtown, purchased by the Sagadahock Historical Society around 1884. The Reading Room is also home to a pair of paintings depicting images of Bath’s Know-Nothing Riot of July, 1854, when a downtown political rally denounced both new immigrants and Catholics in the United States. Overlooking the Reading Room is the bust of John Patten that was carved by Bath-native John Adams Jackson around 1860. John Patten was a charter member of The Patten Library Association, and was involved in a number of charitable organizations in the area as well as Mayor.
