SOUTH PORTLAND — Seven candidates will vie for two at-large City Council seats in the Nov. 8 municipal elections, City Clerk Emily Scully announced Tuesday.
However, no one submitted nomination papers to run for the District 1 school board seat, which represents the area near Southern Maine Community College, and only one candidate – Otis Thompson of 46 Hillside Ave. – qualified to run for the District 2 school board seat.
The councilor-at-large field includes incumbent Councilor Maxine Beecher of 85 Ridgeland Ave. and former Councilor Michael Pock of 86 Grand St. Mayor Tom Blake is termed out as he concludes a third consecutive term on the council.
The other at-large council candidates are: Richard Carter, 33 Thompson St.; James Gilboy, 235 Barnstable Road; Susan Henderson, 9 E St.; Katherine Lewis, 153 Mussey St.; and Louis Maietta Jr., 185 Elderberry Drive.
All council and school board members are elected to three-year terms. At-large members are elected by all city voters.
Although the clerk’s office tallies ballots by machine, it does count write-in votes for seats without qualified candidates or contested races, Scully said.
