BRUNSWICK
Maine State Music Theatre recently announced the shows of their 2017 season. With a record-breaking season in 2016, the theatre is looking to carry on the trend with their lineup of main stage shows for next year.
The 2017 season starts off on June 7-24, with the fan favorite “Always, Patsy Cline.” Through letters and visits, amid homespun stories of laughter and heartache, the show explores the friendship between a housewife and the legendary country singer — a friendship that would last until Cline’s untimely death in 1963. The musical was last seen at MSMT in 2010 and features 27 classic songs, including “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams,” “Back in Baby’s Arms” and more.
In the second slot of the season, MSMT will present Frank Loesser’s “Guys and Dolls,” opening June 28 and running through July 15. It has been 16 years since this musical comedy about rolling the dice and falling in love under the lights of Broadway was seen at MSMT. Set in a mythical New York City, “Guys and Dolls” is a romantic comedy that takes the audience from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City — but eventually, everyone ends up right where they belong.
T-Birds and Pink Ladies will descend upon the Pickard Stage July 19 through Aug. 5 with “Grease.” Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high school romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through the songs from the hit movie including “You’re The One That I Want,” “Grease is The Word,” “Summer Nights,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Greased Lightnin’” and many more.
Finally, summer 2017 closes out with the New England regional premiere of Broadway’s hit sensation “Newsies” Aug. 9- 26. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. The show features a score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Sister Act”) and Jack Feldman including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York” and “Santa Fe.”
Jump into your boots and dust off your Stetson for MSMT’s Monday night concert with The Hank Band on July 10. Playing songs that capture the timeless music of a bygone era, The Hank Band performs hits like “Long Gone Daddy,” “Honky Tonk Blues” and “I Saw the Light.”
“The Who’s Tommy” hits the stage on July 31. Based on the iconic 1969 rock concept album, “The Who’s Tommy” is an exhilarating story of hope, healing, and the human spirit featuring an exhilarating score including songs like “Acid Queen,” “Pinball Wizard,” and “Uncle Ernie.”
2017’s Theatre for Young Audiences shows include Robin and Clark’s “Sleeping Beauty” on June 14 and “Alice in Wonderland” on Aug. 21.
All of MSMT’s performances take place at the Pickard Theater on the campus of Bowdoin College located at 1 Bath Road in Brunswick. The off-season Box Office is located at 22 Elm St., Brunswick.
