A 76-year-old Scarborough woman was struck and fatally injured crossing Route 1 Friday, Aug. 12.

Judith Schwerdtfeger, 76, of Scarborough, was hit as she attempted to cross the five-lane road near Hannaford Drive about 5:45 p.m., according to a group that monitors pedestrian accidents.

Police did not release the identity of the driver.

The accident resulted in the eighth fatality of a personal walking or riding a bike on Maine roadways this year, according to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Last year, 19 pedestrians were killed in the state, according to the group, which monitors crash reports for incidents that involve pedestrians or bicyclists.
