The York County Republican Committee has named a new candidate in the Senate District 32 race in the Biddeford area.

Matthew William Stone of Biddeford was chosen by the committee during a caucus to replace Stephen Martin, a retired police officer who dropped out of the race because of a medical issue that would have prevented him from doing the job.

Stone will run against Sen. Susan Deschambault, a Democrat from Biddeford who won the district’s seat in a special election held in March to replace former Sen. David Dutremble, who resigned for personal reasons.

The deadline for selecting replacement candidates was July 25, but the York County Republicans were allowed to select a new candidate for the District 32 race because Martin’s withdrawal was determined to exempt them from the deadline. Under state law, a replacement candidate can be nominated after the original candidate withdraws due to a “catastrophic illness that permanently and continuously incapacitates” and would prevent the candidate from performing the duties of the office.

Senate District 32 includes Alfred, Arundel, Biddeford, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman.
