Six York County fire departments spent three hours Sunday fighting a brush fire in Hollis that started out as a permitted burn.
Hollis Deputy Fire Chief Chris Young said the fire at 587 Plains Road destroyed 1.5 acres of fields and woods after high winds caused the pile of brush to burn out of control. The individual who obtained a burn permit from the Hollis Fire Department immediately notified authorities.
Young said one Hollis firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Portland for treatment.
There was no water source at the site, and that is why Hollis called on other fire departments to truck water in. Buxton, Standish, Waterboro, Goodwins Mills and Limerick sent manpower and equipment to the fire.
The fire was reported at 2:53 p.m. and was brought under control around 6 p.m.
The Maine Forest Service classified the fire danger as high Sunday for all of York County and coastal Maine from Kittery to Rockland.
