ROCKLAND — Former U.S. Rep. David Emery is running for Senate – the Maine Senate, not the U.S. Senate.
Knox County Republicans on Tuesday nominated the former four-term congressman to try to unseat Democratic state Sen. David Miramont in District 12.
The 67-year-old Emery of Tenants Harbor stepped in after another Republican bowed out. He served in the U.S. House from 1975 to 1983 before making a failed run for U.S. Senate.
It’s unusual for members of Congress to head back to the Legislature. In New Hampshire, Republican Jeb Bradley served two terms in Congress before joining the state Senate in 2009.
The Maine Law and Legislative Reference Library researched the topic for the Bangor Daily News and concluded that the last time it happened in Maine was in 1880.
