Senators from New England states want Sept. 25 designated again as National Lobster Day, in recognition of the region’s signature seafood.

The early fall day was designated in honor of the lobster last year. Maine’s Sens. Angus King, an independent, and Susan Collins, a Republican, introduced the legislation. Maine is by far the biggest lobster producer in the country.

Senators from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut also are behind legislation to make the designation again this year.

The senators say the day recognizes the “historic and economic importance of lobster in the United States.” The U.S. lobster fishery was worth more than a half-billion dollars last year.
