A three-vehicle accident on Route 4 in Auburn sent four people to the hospital Monday with serious injuries.

Police did not immediately release the names of those involved.

Witnesses told Auburn police that a driver was waiting in the northbound lane of Route 4 to turn left on Townsend Brook Road when it was hit from behind by a car and pushed into oncoming traffic.

The crash remains under investigation.
