In what authorities are calling the largest drug bust in state history, agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency seized more than 2 pounds of heroin from James Jamison, 33, of Connecticut, who was arrested early Friday afternoon after fleeing from police and causing a multi-car crash near the Fairfield Inn in Scarborough.

Maine drug agents seized about 10,000 individual bags of pre-packaged doses and the heroin seized is worth about $450,000 on the street, according to authorities. Drug agents believe Jamison was traveling to Aroostook County with the heroin.

Agents attempted to arrest Jamison on Maine Mall Road in South Portland, but he fled toward Payne Road in Scarborough. While trying to escape the police, Jamison was involved in a multi-car crash at the intersection of Payne and Cummings roads in Scarborough.

He was caught about an hour later inside the Fairfield Inn by Scarborough police. While searching for Jamison, the Scarborough police issued a Code Red alert for the neighborhood, urging residents to lock their doors and stay inside.

Jamison was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault, eluding a police officer, driving to endanger and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash. Charges of aggravated trafficking in heroin are also pending.

Jamison is being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 bail and is due to make an appearance in court on Tuesday, July 5. Three drug agents suffered minor injuries in the incident, according to authorities and they were being evaluated Friday afternoon at Maine Medical Center.
