On Wednesday morning the Portland Police Department announced that it had recovered the body of Matthew Foster, 23, from the harbor.
His body was sent to the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office in order to determine his cause of death. Foster, from Scarborough, had been missing and presumed drowned since the weekend of June 10.
Late last week the authorities suspended their search for Foster, after divers found no trace of him. At that time the Portland Police said it would resume looking for Foster if any new information came to light.
In a post on his department’s Facebook page, Scarborough Police Chief Robbie Moulton said, “Our thoughts go out to Matthew’s loved ones.”
In addition, he urged young people, in particular, “to not go out on their own. Adopt a buddy system with a trusted friend so that you can watch out for each other during the evening.”
Moulton said, “Having a friend with you will make you far less likely to get lost, be the victim of a crime, suffer a medical emergency or, in the worst case, be the victim of a tragic accident such as has happened to too many young people of late.”
He added, “Please be smart, be vigilant and be safe. Your loved ones will be forever grateful.”
The body of Matthew Foster has been found in Portland Harbor.
