The first leg of the Trek Across Maine, a three-day cycling tour that raises money for the American Lung Association, kicks off Friday in Bethel .
The 180-mile cycling tour begins at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry. Cyclists will travel to Farmington on Friday, ending at the University of Maine at Farmington, where they will spend the night.
On Saturday cyclists will travel from Farmington to Colby College in Waterville, where they will be met with refreshments and spend the night. Cyclists will depart Sunday morning from Colby for the final leg of the trek, which ends in Belfast.
This year, a new two-day option is being offered. Cyclists who choose to participate in only two days’ worth of the tour will leave from Colby College on Saturday morning, meeting up in Norridgewock with the cyclists who are biking all three days.
The two-day cyclists will finish Saturday back at Colby College.
Food, entertainment and massage therapists will be available for cyclists at both the University of Maine at Farmington and Colby.
This year’s event is the 32nd annual Trek Across Maine, which is the largest fundraising event of its kind in the nation, according to the American Lung Association’s website.
The fundraiser has raised more than $22 million for the American Lung Association.
