Eighth-graders’ poetry published in anthology

Six Wells Junior High School eighth-graders recently earned the distinction of becoming published authors after having their poetry published in the Telling Room’s anthology “Once: 40 Stories and Poems About Time.” The Telling Room is a nonprofit writing center in Portland that holds workshops for writers ages 6 to 18 and conducts an annual writing contest in Maine. All six students were honored at the Telling Room’s annual Big Night event, held at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.

Rotary Club celebrates its Citizen of the Year

More than 100 friends, family and community members gathered at the Spring Hill Lodge to join the South Berwick-Eliot Rotary Club in honoring Wesley E. Kennedy as the 2016 Citizen of the Year.

Kennedy came to South Berwick 40 years ago and served as Maine School Administrative District 35 superintendent for 10 years, earning the Maine Superintendent of the Year Award in 2000.

After his retirement, Kennedy served on the Wentworth- Douglass Hospital Board, was honorary co-chair of the South Berwick Public Library Capital Campaign, and currently serves on the Supervisory Committee of the York County Federal Credit Union, in addition to his service in the Rotary Club.

Curtis library teaches about money habits all month

The Curtis Memorial Library is hosting the Money as You Grow exhibit through June 30 at 23 Pleasant St.

The exhibit will be featured in the library’s collaboratory, an interactive, educational space for all ages with exhibits and programs rotating monthly.

Money as You Grow gives families a way to teach kids of all ages essential money lessons and establish healthy money habits through fun and participatory activities, puzzles and games.

The exhibit is sponsored by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.

Couple named as directors of Salvation Army in region

The Salvation Army has appointed Majs. Raphael and Sandra Jackson as new directors of the organization’s Northern New England Division, overseeing all ministry and service aspects in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The couple succeed Majs. James and Patricia LaBossiere, who recently were assigned to new positions at The Salvation Army’s Territorial Headquarters in West Nyack, New York.

The Jacksons met at The Salvation Army’s Camp Sebago in Standish. Sandra grew up in Maine. They have served in previous roles in the organization in western Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Greater New York.

Both are degreed in organizational management from Nyack College; Raphael also holds a master’s degree in organizational leadership.

Hundreds support hospital by competing in 5K race

More than 750 people took part in the recent York Hospital 5K Road & Cross Country Race, helping to raise nearly $10,000 to benefit York Hospital’s Birthing & Family Care Center.

There were several winners in several age divisions for men and women.

Taking top honors, overall, were Alex Moser of Portland, who finished with a time of 15:47, and Kellie Walker of Newmarket, N.H., who finished in 19:54.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Spring Point lighthouse to open for summer tours

The Spring Point Ledge Light Trust will open the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse to the public beginning this weekend.

The lighthouse will be open on Saturdays in June and on Saturdays and Sundays July 3 through Sept. 10.

Each year, over 3,000 people tour the lighthouse, guided by trustees and volunteers. Visitors have an opportunity to explore a working lighthouse and learn how the keepers lived and about Portland’s maritime history.
