Korea is called “The Forgotten War.” On May 24, 2016, it was remembered in an astonishing way by the members of the Sanford Junior High School band and chorus in two performances at the Memorial Gym, dedicated to the eight Sanford-Springvale servicemen who lost their lives in the Korean Conflict. Our brother, Richard C. Wormwood, was one of them.
We wish to express our family’s sincere thanks to Joe Doiron, Great Works Foundation Fallen Heroes Project; Master of Ceremonies Rowan Fitzgerald; grades seventh and eighth band director Carol Baker Roux; chorus director Nancy Neubert; Vice Admiral George W. Emery; Patty Paradis’ fourth-grade class from Carl J. Lamb; Chaplain Melissa Marquis; Pastor Jonathan Bosse; Bonita Pothia, representing Sen. Angus King; SHS students who are members of the Massabesic High School Junior Naval ROTC and the U.S. Army Honor Guard, who presented the colors; and especially all the talented students who participated.
Musical compositions were created for each of the servicemen, and some were performed by their composers. Our brother Richard received four. Their banners lined Main Street, accompanied by the servicemen who were lost in WWII. Fourth graders from Carl J. Lamb raised the funds necessary to purchase the banners, and students at Sanford Regional Technical Center designed them.
Next year, they plan to honor our native sons who gave their lives in Vietnam. We sincerely hope even more members of our community come out and appreciate the efforts of all these inspiring people.
And let us not forget the brave men and women who are serving our country now.
