Pet owners will be allowed to bring their animals on the Amtrak Downeaster for the foreseeable future and buy pet-friendly travel packages in Maine and Boston.

In October, the Downeaster started a pilot program that allows small pets to accompany their owners on the train. Since then, more than 100 dogs and cats have ridden the train and the feedback from passengers and train crews has been consistently positive, leading the service to make the pet policy permanent.

Starting this summer, the Downeaster is also offering pet-friendly travel packages, like “Doggy Day in Kennebunk,” which includes round-trip Downeaster tickets, transfers from the station, two-night accommodations and a foodie walking tour for pets and their owners.

The Downeaster allows pets at all stations, from Brunswick to Boston. Passengers are allowed to travel with one cat or one small dog in an enclosed carrier. Pet and carrier, together, must weigh 20 pounds or less. An advance reservation and $25 surcharge, each way, is required.
