Scarborough voters will go to the polls June 14 to consider a proposed $47.5 million school budget for 2016-17 that’s $2.3 million or 5 percent higher than the current spending plan.
The municipal, school and county budget proposals total $82 million, which is $3.8 million or 4.9 percent higher than the fiscal year ending June 30. The total amount to be raised through property taxes is $60.6 million, which is a $3 million or 5.2 percent increase.
If the proposed school budget is approved, town officials believe the tax rate would increase about 41 cents, or 2.65 percent, from $15.49 to $15.90 per $1,000 of assessed property value. At that rate, the annual tax bill on a $300,000 home would increase $123, from $4,647 to $4,770.
Voters also will decide whether to continue holding annual school budget referendums for the next three years, which would leave budget approval to the Town Council and School Board.
