Kudos to Paula Steffen of Yarmouth, who wrote the May 12 letter about local taxes and the burden on senior citizens. I imagine most older Maine taxpayers face the same problem.

As a Freeport resident, I’ve experienced continually escalating property taxes. The percentage of that tax now going to local schools is 73 percent.

I have spent 50 years paying local property taxes, supporting schools and personally helping to fund college expenses for two – enough.

We seniors are no longer making significant salaries but are trying and wanting to stay in our homes and not be a burden. Maine is a state with a very high percentage of older citizens and an inadequate supply of decent and affordable senior housing.

This old widow would welcome the return of the Gray Panthers, plus someone in Maine giving seniors a strong voice and some leadership.
