In March 2015, I needed to call for ambulance service for a serious condition. I was transported from Lowe’s on Brighton Avenue in Portland to Maine Medical Center. I was billed $1,678. My insurance paid $1,053, stating that it was the amount allotted and that they felt it was a fair price.

In July, I needed the service again. This time, I was charged $820 for the same distance; again, insurance paid $435, stating the same reasons as before.

I always thought that being a Portland homeowner and paying property taxes covered these services. I guess I was wrong. Since then, the city has turned me over to a collection agency.
