I totally respect Joseph W. Mahoney’s opinion on Gov. Paul LePage (“LePage paid what he’s worth,” April 28). My point wasn’t meant for the person, it was meant for the position of governor of the state of Maine.

Whoever might be the next governor, his or her base salary will be ranked 50th. That’s last of all the 50 state governors, $70,000 per year. The highest is Pennsylvania at $190,000 per year. The average per state is about $125,000 per year.

It doesn’t matter if you like Gov. LePage. Thousands of people voted for him, and he won. I want the next governor’s pay to be a little higher than 50th, whoever that is, whether I like them or not.

So my simple question is: Do you think that any town, city or state official or employee, from city administrator to town manager, to anyone, should be making $50,000-$60,000 or more a year than whoever the governor of the state of Maine is?

I hope and pray that George Mitchell or Olympia Snowe or someone with real leadership and political experience is our next governor.

Thank you, Gov. LePage, for bringing this up, especially since you have no chance to benefit from this.
