Leon A. Tsomides of Old Orchard Beach beseeched the Journal readers (Readers’ Forum, April 19) to give him one good reason why lots of government officials and employees make more than our current governor, Paul LePage.
I will not question why this political figure, who believes in austerity to the degree expressed in the actions of Paul LePage, cutting budgets at every opportunity and preaching the tenants of the tea party credo, would not want to make his own sacrifice to set a good example. And I will not speculate why Leon feels compelled to argue to raise Paul LePage’s salary. I mean, what is his motive here?
But to answer the question at hand, maybe the reason we find other workers making a few thousand more than LePage can be explained by the marketplace. The invisible hand of economics tends to set your salary at what you are worth.
