CAPE ELIZABETH — In pitching Falmouth to an 8-2 victory against Cape Elizabeth in a Western Maine Conference baseball game Wednesday, Cam Guarino wasn’t able to match his opening-day no-hitter.

Still, he allowed just five hits and two unearned runs for the Yachtsmen (3-0).

“We know that every time Cam steps on the mound we have a good chance to win,” said Coach Kevin Winship. “I had a good feeling early on when we got the first couple runs, that’s all he needs. He just gets more confident as the game goes on, and he just gets better as the game goes on.

“He’s not going to be a big strikeout guy but he’s going to get guys out.”

Added Cape Elizabeth Coach Andrew Wood: “Cam’s a pretty good pitcher. Obviously he’s a (Division I) prospect and is a very smart kid. He’s probably one of the best, if not the best pitcher in the state. Just a smart guy; his preparation is there.”

Guarino, a junior, only struck out two, instead inducing weak contact and relying on stellar defense. In fact, his only mistake – which led to both runs for the Capers – was his throwing error in the sixth.

“(The defense) did their job today,” said Guarino. “I was painting my corners and trying to get ground balls, but they carried me this game. It was all them.”

Falmouth paired timely hitting with a rough defensive day for Cape (2-1). The Yachtsmen racked up 12 hits and took advantage of eight errors.

Falmouth scored at least once in each of the first five innings, and all eight runs came with two outs.

“We just battle,” said Connor Aube, who was on base four times and scored three runs for Falmouth. “Two outs doesn’t mean anything to us. We just wanted to get rallies going and that’s what we did. We all just wanted to take advantage if they messed up. That’s what you have to do in baseball, take advantage when you can.”

Colin Coyne went 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and Garrett Aube had two hits, including a double to kick-start the offense with two outs in the second, and two runs. Tyler Gee chipped in two hits and a run, and Chris Camelio added a run.

“We got things going today. Offensively, I thought we hit the ball really well, hit the ball really hard. We took advantage of some of their mistakes,” said Winship. “Early on, the double by Garrett Aube was a great momentum builder for us. That was a huge hit. It’s only his third varsity game; coming up with a big hit like that was huge.”

Jack O’Rourke had a pair of infield singles for Cape Elizabeth. The first, in the third inning, was the first hit against Guarino this year. Dylan Roberts also had two hits and a run, and Brendan Tinsman scored Cape’s other run.
