Between 2010 and 2015, Maine’s population gained just 967 residents – a cumulative gain of less than one tenth of one percent.

During the same period, the Census estimates that thousands more people moved out of Maine than moved in from other states. And Maine was one of only two states (with West Virginia) where the number of deaths outnumbered births.

But while domestic migration, births and deaths together had a substantial negative impact on Maine’s population, those losses were more than offset by population gains from international immigration, which brought in over 7,000 new Mainers during these five years.
