Donald Trump’s Mexican wall is a big crowd pleaser, especially in states where there have been gangs and cheap heroin and where schools, emergency rooms and courts have been inundated. The politics of cheap labor/open borders has unpleasant side effects.
Still, Trump’s wall is a really dumb idea, and he’s full of hot air. Illegal immigration will stop only when Congress passes work site enforcement. (In other words, when hell freezes over!)
In contrast, Hillary Clinton told Jorge Ramos, on Spanish-language television, that she will not deport anyone unless they’re a terrorist or a violent felon. But the press has barely reported her views.
As president, she will take an oath to defend the Constitution. Our Constitution doesn’t give the president the right to promise one ethnic group special federal protection from our laws. And it doesn’t give her the right to pick and choose whether to enforce immigration limits or not. Our laws set limits.
Clinton has a more “presidential” demeanor. But make no mistake: Her position on open borders is radical indeed.
And as the migrant crisis unfolds in Europe, do we really want a president telling the world that everyone, except terrorists and violent felons, will be allowed to come here and stay, without fear of deportation? And do we want a president who panders to an ethnic group so shamelessly that she ignores her responsibilities under the Constitution? Where does this lead us?
