A search party recovered the remains of a man at Acadia National Park on Friday, a park official said.
The body may be that of Ellsworth hiker Timothy Philpott, 50, who was reported missing in January, according to John Kelly, management assistant at the park. The body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine its identity and cause of death.
The body was found by a search dog and his handler about 2:45 p.m. Friday roughly 210 feet from a carriage road in an area northwest of Parkman Mountain.
It could be that of Philpott, who was last seen Jan. 12 and whose car was found Jan. 13 at a Parkman Mountain parking lot, said Kelly.
Crews have been searching the area since Philpott was reported missing. The body was found by the Maine Search and Rescue Dog Organization. A backpack led the search team to the body.
Kelly said the search concentrated in the Parkman Mountain area and branched out.
Philpott went missing just as a snowstorm moved the area, Kelly said.
